The Sun and Moon’s apparent movement across the sky has been tracked for centuries by way of stone circles, creation stories etc. As our Earth is tipped in relation to the Sun, our ever-changing seasons are felt as the sun tracks its way from zenith at the equator (the central line of latitude of the Earth) to the extremes at the Tropic of Capricorn in the south and Tropic of Cancer in the north.

These turning points or special times were celebrated as festivals or ceremonies. When the Sun reaches the equator, the Equinoxes (Alban Eiler and Alban Elfed) are acknowledged as a time of equal light and heat before the Sun waxes into Summer (Alban Heruin) or wanes into Winter (Alban Arthuran) on the never ending yearly cycle of life on Earth.

The Moon follows the same band on a monthly basis but its’ relationship to the sun is celebrated as Full (Bealtianne), Dark (Samhuinn - moon disappears) and the Quartermoons (over the equator) of Imbolc (waxing - New) and Lughnassadh (waning - Old).

You can track these movements yourself in your own place in your own way. Each season offers us an opportunity for:

  • acknowledging the passing of current events into memory
  • counting, honouring and accepting out current blessings,
  • adjusting current conditions by making new plans.

Unique insights are available to us at each turn of the Season if we seize the opportunity of the star energy. Exact conditions will never be repeated and cannot be experienced by the intellect alone.

In recent times, people have introduced the Eightfold Year of Ceremonies to assist us to note or mark how star energy manifests on earth. It is derived from fragments of Celtic and Druid heritage and offers us eight different opportunities in each year to connect our daily life to the star energy above and the Celtic history buried beneath the earth.

The eight special times are listed below.  The turning or mid points of each season are traditionally associated with the Celtic goddess archetypes to help us gain the most of the seasonal opportunities for personal growth.

Cultural customs developed in the northern hemisphere have been transposed for use by us in the southern hemisphere.

Enjoy your year! Jessica
